Hundreds of locals attack, blockade road outside Jashore MP Golam Rasul’s house

Hundreds of local men and women attacked and protested at the house of Professor Golam Rasul, MP for the Jashore-4 constituency and district Jamaat Ameer. 

Tension spread in the area when the protesters blocked the Jashore-Narail highway at one stage. Traffic on the road was disrupted at that time. Police calmed the situation after about three hours.

An eyewitness, Abdus Salam of the Nilganj area of the city, said, “There has been a long-standing dispute over Al Madrasatush Shariah and a mosque adjacent to MP Golam Rasul’s house in the Nilganj area of the city. Due to this, on Monday morning the MP’s daughter, named Mehzabin Ananya, a medical student, beat up a woman named Ayan and Rexna, a child student of the madrasa. A settlement was reached between the two sides on Monday night. It was alleged that after the madrasa opened on Tuesday morning, the educational institution was asked to close again. Then angry locals gathered in front of the MP’s house around 10.30am and started a protest. At one point they pelted bricks and stones at the MP’s house, breaking the window glass of the house.”

Protester Rabiul alleged that the madrasa had been threatened to be closed. In addition, when the protesters gathered in front of the MP’s house on Tuesday morning, hot water was poured down from the second floor, sparking a new tension.

Eyewitnesses said that when Abdullah, a relative of Golam Rasul, went to the spot around 11.30am to resolve the situation, the angry crowd beat him up. At one stage the protesters blocked the Jashore-Narail highway and started shouting various slogans. They remained on the road for a long time demanding justice for MP Golam Rasul and his daughter.

Upon receiving the information, the Inspector (Operations) of Kotwali Police Station reached the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. 

He said that efforts have been taken to normalise the situation by discussing with both parties. Law-enforcement officers are at the scene and monitoring the overall situation.

MP Golam Rasul’s wife Sharmin Dina said her daughter Ananya is suffering from mental problems. Although the madrasa is closed, children go there at different times to create a ruckus. Protesting against this has led to a dispute with them. She said, “Our house is being attacked and now false allegations are being made.”

When MP Golam Rasul was contacted, he did not comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge of Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station Masum Khan said that the situation had calmed down by around 1pm. The police have calmed down both sides by convincing them. Appropriate action will be taken later.
