Dhaka appoints law firm in Dubai to return Benazir to home

The government has begun legal steps to cancel the bail granted to former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed in Dubai and secure his return to Bangladesh, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters after the closing parade of the 27th BCS (Police) Batch’s first-stage training at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, the minister confirmed that a law firm has been appointed in Dubai for the purpose.

“We have learned that former IGP Benazir Ahmed has been granted conditional bail by a Dubai court. The Bangladesh government has appointed a law firm there to cancel the bail order. We are hopeful of bringing him back through legal proceedings,” he said.

Salahuddin added that efforts are underway to obtain a certified copy of the court order, expressing optimism that the bail could be revoked swiftly.

On a separate note, the home minister said the government has asked everyone to remain alert in August amid observed activities of the banned Awami League. 

“The various activities of the Awami fascist group, which is a banned political organisation, are being observed in August. That is why we have asked everyone to be alert,” he said in response to a question about a nationwide police alert.

He also addressed recent discoveries of suspicious objects in Dhaka, including a bag left at Mirpur-10 metro station on Saturday. The police bomb disposal unit examined it and found no explosives, Ahmed said, adding that each such incident is under investigation.

On Saturday, Police Headquarters issued a nationwide alert warning that police vehicles could be targeted and directed all field units to immediately strengthen security.
