Husband surrenders to police after killing wife, mother-in-law in Kalabagan

A man named Hridoy alias Shipon has been accused of stabbing his wife and mother-in-law to death in the capital’s Kalabagan area. 

After the incident, he went to Kalabagan police station and surrendered.

The incident took place at around 9:30 am on Sunday at a house on Al-Amin Road in Kathalbagan under Kalabagan police station.

The deceased were identified as Farzana Akhter Ratri, 20, and her mother Firoza Begum, 40.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalabagan police station Fazle Ashiq said that the murder took place due to a family dispute. After the incident, the accused Hridoy alias Shipon came to the police station and surrendered. 

A case is under process in this incident, the OC added.

Police said that the couple had gone to a function in Mohammadpur on Saturday. They returned from there and stayed at their in-laws’ house on Al-Amin Road in Kanthalbagan at night. The incident took place during a quarrel between them on Sunday morning.

Police and local sources said that pickup van driver Hridoy lived in a rented house on Alamin Road with his wife and child. The quarrel between the couple started around 9 am on Sunday. At one stage, Farzana’s mother Firoza Begum took her daughter’s side, while her son-in-law Shipon caused the incident.

It is alleged that at one stage of the quarrel around 9:30 am, Hridoy first stabbed his wife Farzana with a vegetable knife in the house. She died on the spot. Later, when she tried to stop him, he also stabbed his mother-in-law Firoza Begum.

Firoza Begum was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a seriously injured condition, where doctors declared her dead. 

Police recovered Farzana’s body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. 

The investigation into the incident is under way, said police.
