Ex-MP Akhtaruzzaman remanded in Anti-Terrorism Act case

A Dhaka court on Monday placed Awami League leader and former Member of Parliament (MP) from Gazipur-5 constituency Akhtaruzzaman on a three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order this noon after holding hearing on a police plea to place the former lawmaker on a seven-day remand in the case.

Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by a team of Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on August 5 from the capital's Gulshan area.

According to the case statement, on June 18, 2026, several members of the banned Chhatra League, Awami League and its affiliated organisations held an illegal procession on the paved road adjacent to Mohakhali Bus Terminal.

During the procession, they chanted various slogans, including demanding withdrawal of the ban on the Awami League, and allegedly detonated cocktails. 

The accused allegedly conspired, instigated and encouraged party activists to engage in terrorist activities with the intention of harming the state and endangering the solidarity, public security and sovereignty of the independent state.

A case was subsequently filed with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the incident.
