PSC Chairman Mobasher Monem resigns

Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Professor Mobasher Monem has resigned from his post, citing physical illness.

However, sources indicate that mounting government pressure over the commission’s demand for full autonomy may have prompted the sudden departure. 

PSC Public Relations Officer S. M. Matiur Rahman confirmed the resignation, stating that Monem submitted his letter on Tuesday afternoon. 

Monem, a professor from the Department of Public Administration at Dhaka University, was appointed on October 9, 2024, just a day after the previous chairman, Md. Sohrab Hossain, and all commission members resigned en masse following the fall of the Awami League government during the student-led mass uprising. 

While the official reason for Monem’s resignation is stated as an inability to perform his duties due to health issues, insiders suggest a different narrative. 

A PSC member, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Daily Samakal that the commission recently sent a letter to the Ministry of Public Administration demanding full autonomy. The move reportedly drew a negative reaction from the new government. 

The source alleged that psychological pressure and a hostile attitude from the administration over this autonomy push played a major role in the chairman's decision to step down.
