Former Chief Justice Khairul Haque released on bail

Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque was finally released from prison after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in nine cases. 

He was released from Keraniganj Special Prison around 4pm on Wednesday.

Inspector General of Prisons (IG Prisons) Brigadier General Syed Md Motaher Hossain confirmed his release.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Motaher Hossain Saju also confirmed his release. 

He said that in the past one year, he was arrested in a total of nine cases of murder or attempted murder in the July mass uprising, changing the verdict to abolish the caretaker government system, fraud charges and corruption. He got bail from the Supreme Court in all of them.

The Appellate Division Chamber Court upheld the bail granted to Khairul Haque by the High Court in the latest case filed at the capital’s Banani Police Station during the July Uprising and under the Explosives Control Act. 

Chamber Justice Md Rezaul Haque issued a “no order” order on Monday following the state’s application seeking to suspend the bail granted by the High Court.

On July 24, 2025, after the July Uprising, the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested former Chief Justice Khairul Haque from his residence in Dhanmondi in the capital. That night, he was shown arrested in the murder case of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Qayyum Ahad in Jatrabari and sent to jail. 

He has been in jail since then.

Although his bail was upheld by the Supreme Court in various cases in April and May 2026, he could not be released from prison because he was shown arrested in a new case. 

ABM Khairul Haque took charge as the 19th Chief Justice of the country on September 30, 2010. He retired on May 17, 2011.
