Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir sworn in as 23rd President of Bangladesh

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. 

Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal administered the oath to him at a ceremony held at Bangabhaban on Friday evening.

Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram), Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, cabinet members, foreign diplomats, members of parliament and senior civil and military officials were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Md. Shahabuddin resigned from the post of President on July 24. Then, the then Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed took over the charge of Acting President as per the constitution while Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal took over the charge of Acting Speaker.

Then, the presidential election was held in the meeting room of the Parliament House on Thursday, August 20. BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected President after getting 255 votes in the election. His rival, 11-party unity candidate Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.
