Farmers force open warehouse, seize 197 sacks of fertiliser in Kurigram

A group of farmers in Bhurungamari, Kurigram, broke into a dealer’s warehouse on Sunday and took away 197 sacks of fertiliser after failing to obtain supplies.

The incident occurred around 11am at Messrs Shah Amanat Dealer Point in Shilkhuri Union. 

More than 200 farmers had gathered since morning. When the warehouse remained closed despite a long wait, they forced the door open and took away the fertiliser.

Taifur Rahman Mukul of Shah Amanat Traders holds the dealership for the union, with an allocation of 1,320 sacks. Of these, 340 were stored at the site.

Police arrived, restored order and secured the remaining stock. Thirty-three farmers later returned 33 sacks with police assistance. The rest of the fertiliser has not been recovered.

Bhurungamari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azim Uddin said demand in the union stands at about 4,000 sacks against an allocation of 1,320, with actual availability lower still. 

Farmers seized the stock out of fear they would receive none, he said. Efforts to recover the remaining fertiliser continue.
