Former army chief Shafiuddin summoned by ACC over corruption allegations

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned former army chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed for questioning over allegations of irregularities and amassing illegal wealth through corruption.

He has been directed to appear at the ACC headquarters at 12:30pm on September 14 to record his statement, ACC Public Relations Officer Akhtarul Islam confirmed to Daily Samakal on Sunday.

According to a notice issued by ACC Director Md Abul Hasnat, the commission received complaints against Shafiuddin Ahmed alleging various irregularities and illegal accumulation of wealth. 

A two-member investigation team, led by Hasnat and including Deputy Director Mozammil Hossain, has been formed to probe the matter.

The notice stated that recording Shafiuddin Ahmed’s statement is essential for a fair investigation. He has been asked to bring a photocopy of his national identity card.

ACC records show the investigation began on December 14, 2025.

General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed assumed charge as Chief of Army Staff on June 24, 2021, succeeding General Aziz Ahmed. 

He retired on June 23, 2024, after completing a three-year tenure. 

During his time as army chief, he also served as president of the Bangladesh Olympic Association.
