US Embassy reminds B1/B2 visa holders of restrictions

The US Embassy in Dhaka on Saturday reminded B1/B2 visitor visa holders that birth tourism, paid employment and formal study for academic credit are not permitted under the visa category. 

The embassy issued the reminder in a post on its verified Facebook page, outlining activities that B1/B2 visa holders are not authorised to undertake while in the United States.

According to the post, “birth tourism”, travelling to the United States primarily to give birth for the purpose of obtaining US citizenship for the child, is not permitted under a B1/B2 visitor visa.

The visa also does not allow holders to work for or receive remuneration from a US employer or business, or otherwise perform work in exchange for payment.

Formal study leading towards a degree or institutional academic credit is also prohibited under the visitor visa category, the embassy said.

B1/B2 visas are non-immigrant visitor visas generally issued for temporary travel to the United States for business or tourism purposes.

The B1 category covers certain temporary business activities, while the B2 category generally covers tourism, holidays, visits and medical treatment.
