Deaths from measles and measles-like symptoms exceed 1,000

The death toll from measles and measles-like symptoms in the country has surpassed 1,000. In the 24 hours leading up to 8:00 am on Wednesday, three more people died from measles-like symptoms, bringing the total number of associated deaths this year to 1,002. Of these, 100 were confirmed measles cases, while 902 involved measles-like symptoms.

This information was released in the Directorate General of Health Services’ (DGHS) regular measles report on Wednesday.

According to DGHS data, 1,119 new cases of measles-like symptoms and 69 confirmed measles cases were reported nationwide in the past 24 hours. Between March 15 and September 9, a total of 167,580 people exhibited measles-like symptoms, while 19,904 confirmed cases were recorded during the same period.

So far this year, 147,393 patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country with measles or measles-like symptoms. Of these, 141,819 have recovered and been discharged. The three individuals who died from measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours were from Mymensingh, Netrokona, and Dhaka districts.

Epidemiologists note that measles can affect people of any age, though children remain at higher risk. During an outbreak, deaths involving measles-like symptoms are classified as measles-related deaths.
