HC directs police to verify warrants before making arrests

The High Court (HC) has directed police officers to verify the authenticity of arrest warrants through the Crime Data Management System (CDMS) before making any arrest.

In addition, the High Court directed the authorities to take measures to ensure the identities of the complainant and the lawyer are verified when filing complaint cases by attaching copies of the lawyer's identity card and the complainant's National Identity Card (NID) to the case records.

A High Court division bench of Justice KM Hafizul Alam and Justice Murad-A-Mowla Sohel pronounced the judgment, disposing of a rule issued in this connection earlier.

Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), filed the writ petition before the High Court in public interest following the arrest of a person named Arif Niazi on the basis of a fake warrant.

Senior Advocate Manzill Murshid moved the plea for HRPB before the court, while Deputy Attorney General JR Khan Robin and Assistant Attorney General Mohammad Humayun Hossain Tuhin stood for the state.
