Crude bomb explodes nearby Supreme Court main gate

A crude bomb exploded in front of the main gate of the Supreme Court between 1:15 pm and 1:20 pm on Tuesday.

The incident took place following the announcement of death sentences for seven top leaders—including Obaidul Quader, General Secretary of the Awami League (a party whose activities have been banned)—in a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.

Md. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, stated that miscreants arriving on a motorcycle detonated the crude bomb in front of the Supreme Court's main gate around 1:15 pm.

He added that no one has been detained yet in connection with the incident, though efforts to apprehend the perpetrators are underway.

Earlier, a three-member judicial panel led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, Chairman of International Crimes Tribunal-2, had sentenced the seven accused—belonging to the banned Awami League and its affiliated and associate organisations—to death.
