Body of MP Gazi Nazrul's second wife recovered from NAM Bhaban

Police have recovered the body of Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Gazi Nazrul Islam—a Jamaat-e-Islami MP (later expelled) representing the Satkhira-4 constituency.

Her body was recovered on Sunday from a flat at the Members of Parliament (MP) residence complex (NAM Bhaban) in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

Ibn Mizan, Deputy Commissioner of the Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told Daily Samakal that a police team, including himself, visited NAM Bhaban at 7pm after receiving the report.

Police stated that MP Nazrul Islam resided in flat number 203 on the second floor of Building No. 5 with his wife. 

Upon arriving at the scene, Mariam's body was seen hanging from the ceiling fan through the room's window, they said.

Forensic units from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were subsequently informed to collect evidence; local police did not enter the room until their arrival.

Controversy and public discussion surrounding the couple had previously arisen last July after videos capturing "private moments" between Gazi Nazrul Islam and Mariam circulated on social media. 

Nazrul Islam faced significant criticism over the issue. He had claimed that Mariam was his second wife and that he had married her with his first wife's consent. However, it was later revealed that his first wife was completely unaware of the second marriage.

Following that incident, on July 22, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Nazrul Islam from the party. He was expelled after an organisational investigation confirmed moral misconduct on his part, and the Election Commission was simultaneously informed of the matter.
