Gazi Nazrul sent to jail after two rounds of remand

A Dhaka court has sent Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam to jail in a case of abetment of suicide filed over the recovery of the hanging body of his second wife Mariam Akter.

On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate rejected his bail application and ordered him to be sent to jail.

After completing eight days of remand in two phases, the investigation officer of the case, DB Inspector Mohammad Salauddin, produced Gazi Nazrul Islam in court and prayed for his detention in jail. 

Defence lawyer Mahbubul Islam applied for bail on behalf of the accused. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail.

Earlier, on September 21, the court granted four days’ remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and one day’s remand for his wife Maksudah Islam in this case. 

Later, on September 24, another four days’ remand was granted for Gazi Nazrul.

Mariam Akter’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed the case under Section 306 of the Penal Code against Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksudah Islam, and Md. Obaidur Rahman on charges of abetting her suicide.

After one day’s remand, Maksudah Islam was sent to jail on September 22. The other accused, Obaidur Rahman, was arrested on September 23 and sent to jail.

According to the FIR of the case, Mariam’s marriage with Gazi Nazrul Islam was solemnised in June this year according to Islamic Shariah. 

Her father alleged that from after the marriage, her husband Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksudah Islam subjected Mariam to physical and mental torture over various issues.

The FIR further states that Mariam had informed her family members about these tortures over the phone at different times.
