Take steps within 6 months to hold Ducsu polls: HC to DU

The High Court has directed the Dhaka University (DU) authorities to take steps within six months to hold Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) polls.

A two-member HC bench comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md. Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order on on Wednesday morning.  

The court also ordered the police administration to take necessary steps to keep the law and order situation normal at DU campus during the Ducsu polls.   

On Tuesday, the HC concluded the hearing of a rule which asked the authorities concerned to explain why the failure to hold Ducsu polls will not be declared illegal.  

Education secretary, DU Vice-chancellor, treasurer, registrar and proctor were made respondents to the rule. 

The HC issued the rule on April, 2012 following a writ petition filed by 25 students of DU in March of the same year seeking a court order to compel the authorities concerned to arrange the Ducsu election. 

HC lawyer advocate Monjil Morshed stood for the petitioners while Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam and deputy AG Amit Talukdar argued on behalf of the government. 

The last Ducsu election was held in 1990.
