Sylhet Mayor Ariful sued for money embezzlement

Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury has been sued in Dhaka on charges of cheating and embezzling a huge amount of money.

Sanjay Roy, a contractor, filed the lawsuit against Mayor Arif with the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Dhaka on Thursday under penal codes 420, 406 and 506.

Sheikh Mostafizur Rahman, director of Mahbub Brothers Limited, a contractor of Dhaka, has also been charged in the case.

After the hearing on Thursday, the court took cognizance of the charges against them and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the matter, said plaintiff's lawyer Abdullah Al Zahid.

He told the Daily Samakal that a case was filed against two persons, including Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, for allegedly embezzling of Tk 2.66 crore. 

The court set November 13 to hear the case.
