BNP MP Harun gets 5-year jail

A Dhaka court has sentenced BNP lawmaker Harun Ur Rashid to five years in jail in a case filed against him for embezzling money by selling a duty-free car.

Sheikh Nazmul Alam, a judge of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-4, passed the verdict on Monday.

The court also fined him Tk 50 lakh, in default, to suffer six months more imprisonment.

The court also sentenced businessman  Enayetur Rahim Bappi to two years jail with Tk one lakh fine while businessman Imtiaz Sadeque, to three years imprisonment with Tk 40 lakh fine. They were tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution, Harun-ur-Rashid imported a duty-free vehicle in 2004 which was later sold out.

Mohammad Yunus Ali, the then sub-inspector of Tejgaon Police Station filed a case against MP Harun and two others in 2007.
