BNP MP Harun challenges jail sentence in HC

BNP lawmaker Harun Ur Rashid has filed an appeal with the High Court challenging a lower court verdict that sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment in a tax-dodging case.

Claiming him innocent, the MP urged the High Court to grant him bail and acquit him of the case.

The High Court may hold hearing on the appeal later in the day.

On October 21, a Dhaka court sentenced Harunur Rashid, BNP lawmaker from Chapainawabganj-3 constituency, to five years’ imprisonment in a case filed for abusing duty-free import privilege.

Judge of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 Sheikh Nazmul Alam handed down the verdict with Tk 50 lakh fine, in default, to suffer six months more imprisonment.

A tax-dodging case was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
