Councillor Manju on 10-day remand

A Dhaka court has put Mainul Haque Manju, a ward councillor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), on a 10-day remand in two separate cases filed for possessing illegal firearms and drugs.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dhiman Chandra Mondol passed the order on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Harun-Or-Rashid produced Manju before the court seeking a seven-day remand prayer in each case.

Moreover, the same court also granted a five-day remand to Sajjad Hossain, Manju's driver, in the drug case.

On Thursday night, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) filed two cases against Manju with Wari Police Station under the Arms Act and the Narcotics Control Act.

The elite force arrested Manju, councillor of ward-39 from his office on Thursday. 

Later, during the drive in his office and home, RAB seized two firearms, some bottles of liquor, a stash of cannabis, and a large amount of sex stimulats.

On October 26, the Daily Samakal published a report saying that councillor Manju had long been running an extortion racket in the area.

The report added that if any person refuses to pay extortion, he tortured him inhumanly.
