'Bulbul' takes 10 lives, damages 5,000 houses

Nine people were killed in eight districts due to cyclonic storm 'Bulbul' as it made landfall in Khulna and adjoining southwestern part of the country early Sunday.

Another ailing person died in the hospital.

The Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and Samakal Correspondents confirmed the deaths.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman said the cyclone has destroyed around 5,000 houses across the coastal districts.

He was addressing a press briefing at the Secretariat on the post-cyclone situation.

Khulna Bureau 

Promila Mondol, 52, was killed as a tree fell on her during the storm in Dacope upazila in the morning, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Wadud.

In Dighulia upazila of Khulna, a youth named Alamgir Hossain, died as a tree fell on him during storm at Senhati village in the morning.

Patuakhali 

Hamed Fakir, 65, a fisherman, died when a heavy tree fell on his house during storm at Uttar Rampur village under Madhobkhali union in Mirzaganj upazila in the early hours of Sunday.  Mirzaganj UNO Md Sarwar Hossain confirmed the death incident.

Barguna 

An elderly woman, Halima Khatun, 66, died after she fell ill at a shelter in Borguna Sadar upazila, said UNO Anisur Rahman.

Madaripur

A housewife, Saleha Begum, 45, has died in Madaripur Sadar upazila when a tree fell on her during the gusty wind of cyclone Bulbul.

The incident took place at around 3 pm on Sunday.

Bagerhat

A girl, Samia, 15, has died in a severe windstorm in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat.

Gopalganj

An elderly man named Sekel Howlader, 70, was killed during a storm as a tree fell on him, UNO SM Mahfuzur Rahman confirmed the death.

Pirojpur

Nonigopal Mandal, 65, died during the cyclone at Nazirpur upazila in Pirojpur.

The incident took place at Lara village of Malikhali union around 1 pm on Sunday, said UNO Rosy Akter. 

Barishal

Ashalata Mazumdar, 65, died in Uzirpur upazila of the district on Sunday as a tree fell on her during the cyclone Bulbul.
