Commuters suffer for fewer vehicles on Dhaka streets

Transport workers have called for strikes in various districts of the country since the new road transport law came into effect on Sunday.

Its impact has also fallen in the capital city too. A poor number of traffic has been seen on different roads since the morning on Tuesday. The passengers are suffering much to reach their destinations, offices due to the shortage of public transports.

It is 9 o'clock. Mehedi Hasan, who works at a private company, was waiting for a bus at Mirpur 10 in the capital to reach his office in Banani. But he could not get on a bus even after standing there for 45 minutes.

Like Mehedi Hasan, many commuters have fallen into trouble on the day due to shortage of transports without any prior notice.

However, the authorities concerned said no transport strike is being observed in the capital.

Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association Secretary General Khandaker Enayet Ullah said, "Bus owners have no program in the capital. However, some are not driving the buses on the streets as they did not update the related papers."

Asked about transport strikes in different districts of the country, he said, "We have no central decision on the transport strike. Various inter-district associations have called for strike."
