Holey Artisan verdict a milestone to curb militancy: Attorney General

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam termed the verdict in the case filed for the terror attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, capital of Dhaka.

He told the media in an immediate reaction to the verdict delivered on Wednesday. 

Responding to the question of journalists in his office after the verdict, Mahbubey Alam added that a social movement is needed to eradicate militancy from society.

"This is evident from the verdict of this case that our country is able to take sincere and quick action to end terrorism," he said.

He also said, "The image of our country greatly hampered by the brutal attack on the Holey Artisan. With this verdict, our image will be brightened. This has proved that the government is putting its utmost efforts to eradicate militancy and establish rule of law in our country. "

A Dhaka court has sentenced seven people to death for their involvement in the horrific militant attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery at Gulshan in the capital that left 22 people dead.

Judge Md Majibur Rahman of Dhaka Anti-terrorism Special Tribunal pronounced the verdict on Wednesday noon in presence of the accused in the crowded courtroom.

On July 1, 2016, militants killed 20 innocent people, most of them foreigners in the Gulshan's Holey Artisan.

Two police officials - ASP Rabiul Karim and OC Salahuddin Khan - valiantly laid down their lives while trying to save people there.
