JU students leaving halls

The students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) were seen leaving the dormitories on Wednesday afternoon following the latest order of the authorities in this connection.

The JU authorities asked the students to vacate the hall by 3:30 pm on the day.

The decision was taken at a provost committee meeting held in the afternoon amid the ongoing protests of the students demanding the removal of vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam.

"None, including the protestors, the general students, and the BCL men can stay at the halls. Police will conduct searches in residential halls if necessary. And legal action will be taken against students who will remain at halls after the deadline," the university authorities told reporters.

Meanwhile, the protesting students gathered in front of the old administrative building of the university. At a press briefing in the evening followed by a demonstration in the afternoon , they said that they would continue their movement until the VC is removed.

On Tuesday, the authorities have declared JU closed for an indefinite period in the face of ongoing protests demanding the removal of the vice-chancellor. Then, students were asked to leave the halls by 4:30 pm on the day.

Defying the order, students continued staging demonstrations on the campus. They threatened that they would not leave the campus until the VC resigns from her post.

Under the circumstances, the authorities took the decision by asking the students to vacate the halls by 3:30 pm.

Meanwhile, the protesting teachers of JU have demanded the removal of VC Professor Farzana Islam on charges of assaulting teachers and students and her corruption.

They also demanded the government to suspend the VC from the university.

The teachers made the demands at a 'solidarity rally' against corruption organized at the university's old administrative building at 12 noon on Wednesday.
