Sayeed Khokon made AL central committee member

The Awami League has made outgoing Dhaka South Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon its central working committee member.

Awami League president Sheikh Hasina took the decision in this regard.

According to a press statement signed by the party's office secretary Barrister Biplob Barua on Sunday, Awami League president Sheikh Hasina nominated Mohammad Sayeed Khokon as a member of the party's central working committee with the power given by the party's 21st National Council held on December 20 and 21 last year.

Khokon was elected as Dhaka South mayor in 2015 and he sought the ruling party’s nomination for re-election but Hasina chose Taposh this time.

Then Khokon said that he had accepted Sheikh Hasina's decision happily as the party chief is his guardian in absence of his father Mohammad Hanif, the late mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation.

Hanif was a close aide to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was also president of Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League for long period.

Hanif died while suffering from the wounds that he received during making human shield while grenade attack was made targeting Sheikh Hasina on August 21 in 2004 in Dhaka's Bangabandhu Avenue.
