Payra power plant begins production

Payra coal-based thermal power plant in Patuakhali’s Kalapara upazila has begun to produce electricity.
On Monday, the plant was connected to the national grid and started supplying power of 100 megawatts.
The production from the plant of 1320 megawatts capacity will be increased gradually.
The 1,320-megawatt twin coal-fired power plant is a joint venture between the North-West Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited and China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation.
The $2bn Payra power project is financed through 30 percent equity investment provided by BCPCL partners and 70 percent debt provided through loan from Chinese banks led by Chinese Export Import (Exim) Bank.
The power plant will consist of two 660MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired power generating units.
The coal requirement for the plant is estimated to be 4.12 million tonnes per year (Mt/y), which will be imported from Indonesia, China and Australia.
