Young tigers to be accorded grand reception: Quader

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that the government will accord a grand reception to Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team, which won the ICC Under-19 World Cup defeating the mighty India.

The grand reception ceremony will be held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city, he said while speaking at a press conference on the contemporary affairs at the Secretariat on Monday, reports BSS.

Quader said India is a four-time champion of the ICC Under-19 World Cup and it is a hard task for any team to defeat India.

“Once any Bangladesh team won anything, it was accorded reception. The prime minister told the cabinet that a grand reception would be accorded to the youth tigers at Suhrawardy Udyan for clinching the ICC U-19 World Cup trophy,” he said.

Congratulating the Under-19 cricket team, the road transport and bridges minister said they earned the U-19 World Cup Trophy for the first time since the country’s independence by beating a strong team like India.

“The cabinet meeting today decided to celebrate the victory…when they will return home, we will celebrate the victory at a convenient time,” he added.

Quader hoped that one day Bangladesh would win the ICC World Cup following footprints of the young tigers.

“The outstanding performance of the Under-19 cricketers has put our expectation at a new height. Most remarkably, skipper Akbar showed a mature captaincy in the final match. When our team lost six wickets, we did not think that we would be able to win. But they won under Akbar’s leadership,” he added.

A rampant Bangladesh came all guns blazing to edge mighty India past by three wickets through D/L method in the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup to lift the coveted trophy for the first time at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, South Africa, on Sunday.
