HC forms body to probe MC College rape incident

The High Court has formed a three-member committee to inquire into the incident of gang-rape of a housewife at Murari Chand College in Sylhet on September 25.

The committee members include judge of the Sylhet Women & Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate and Additional Deputy Commissioner (General). They were asked to submit the report within the next 15 days.

A virtual bench of the High Court headed by Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Miah issued the suo moto (voluntary) rule on Tuesday.

Taking note of the media reports, the Supreme Court lawyer Mesbah Uddin's application sought for the necessary order of the High Court in the context.

Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Md Russell Chowdhury took part in the hearing on behalf of the state.

The rule asked why no action will be taken against the college principal and hostel superintendent in this incident. 

Defendants, including Education Secretary, Home Secretary, Law Secretary, Principal of MC College, Hostel Super, have been asked to respond to the rule within two weeks. At the same time, the court has fixed October 18 for the next order.

A group of youths tied up a man and raped his 19-year-old wife at the MC College dormitory on September 25.

Victim’s husband filed a case at Shahporan Police Station the following day against nine people mentioning the names of six people.

Arrest

So far, police arrested seven people including main suspect Saifur Rahman, from different parts of the country.

Of them, five are ‘ezhar’- listed accused while two others are arrested for their suspected involvement in the incident.

The arrestees are Arjun Laskar, Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Rajon, Robiul Islam, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum and Ainuddin

Meanwhile, a Sylhet court on Tuesday (today) placed Mahbubur Rahman Rony, an accused in the case and two suspects- Rajon and Ainuddin--on a 5-day remand each in the case.

Earlier on Monday, the court placed Saifur Rahman Saifur, Arjun Lashkar and Robiul Islam, on a 5-day each remand in the case.

Judge Sharmin Khanom Mila of Metropolitan Magistrate Court No-3 on September 27, recorded the statement of the victim who was gang raped at MC College on Friday.
