12 killed in Joypurhat bus-train collision

At least 12 people have been killed in a train-bus collision at Joypurhat railway gate.

The accident took place at Puranpail Railgate in Sadar around 7 am on Saturday, leaving several more people injured.

It is learned that the accident took place when a Hiligami bus leaving from Joypurhat collided with the Rajshahi-bound train while crossing the rail crossing.

The local police administration, BGB and fire service are conducting rescue operations at the spot.

The injured have been admitted to Joypurhat Modern Hospital.

Since the accident, rail communication with the northern districts has been suspended.

The identities of the deceased are – Sarwar Hossain (32) and Arifur Rahman Rabbi (34), both are sons of Altaf, a resident of Atul village in Sadar upazila, Ramzan Ali (38), son of Manik from Hichmi village, Saju Mia (28), son of Dudu Qazi from Chakbila village, and Babu (35), son of Gora Mia of Raninagar Bijoykanti village under Naogaon upazila.

The identities of the other victims could not be known immediately.

Police and fire service sources said the accident took place at around 6:55 am, when the Rajshahi-bound ‘Uttara’ Mail train from Parbatipur hit the Hili-bound bus, leaving ten people dead on the spot and four others injured.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Salam Kabir said the rescue operation started soon after the accident took place.

On information, Joypurhat Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation.

Khandaker Chanaul Haque, Deputy Assistant Director of the local fire service, said bodies of 10 people were recovered from the bus and the injured were rushed to District Modern Hospital.

Duty Doctor Rashed Mobarak of District Modern Hospital told BSS that as the condition of the injured deteriorated, they were referred to Shaheed Zia Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Later, two people died on way to Bogra Shaheed Zia Medical College Hospital, he added. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shariful Islam, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Salam Kabir, Chairman of the District Council and president of the district Awami League Arifur Rahman visited the spot.

The deputy commissioner announced compensation money for the victims and injured.
