Complaints of prominent citizens have no basis: Commissioner Shahadat

Regarding the 42 prominent citizens' letter to the President to take action against the Election Commission (EC), Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury said the move might be motivated and there is no basis for it.

"It was not prudent for the eminent citizens to present such an issue to the President,” he said this in response to a question from reporters at his office on Sunday afternoon.

Forty-two prominent citizens have demanded that the current EC, led by KM Nurul Huda, should be investigated for allegations of gross misconduct, financial corruption and irregularities by forming a Supreme Judicial Council.

Election Commissioner Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury said the eminent persons had made such allegations based on a couple of newspaper or television reports. 

“We published rejoinder in the newpaper that specifically covered the issue of training and car use. We don't know whether they know it .”

In response to a question, the commissioner said that the present Election Commission is trying its best to hold fair, free elections.
