Verdict in Avijit murder case on February 16

The court has fixed February 16 to deliver the verdict in the murder case of Avijit Roy, the founder of Mukto Mona blog.

After presenting the arguments of the state and the defendants, Dhaka’s Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal Judge Mojibur Rahman set the date on Thursday. Four accused were present in the court at the time.

The accused in the case are sacked Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Zia, Mozammel Hussain alias Simon (organizational name Shahriar), Abu Siddique Sohel alias Shakib alias Sajid, Akram Hossain alias Abir, Arafat Rahman and Shafiur Rahman Farabi. Major Zia and Akram Hossain went into hiding while the other four accused are in jail.

On the night of February 26, 2015, miscreants attacked Avijit Roy and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya in front of the TSC in the Dhaka University area on the way back from Amar Ekushey Book Fair. Avijit died after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Avijit's father, Professor Ajoy Roy filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station the next day.

The chargesheet was filed in the court on March 13, 2020. On August 1 of the same year, the court directed to start the trial by forming charges against the six accused.
