Hefajat activists 'snatched' Maulana Mamunul from police

Hefajat-e-Islam central joint secretary general Maulana Mamunul Haque has been ‘snatched away’ from the police by the Hefajat activists after he was being taken to a police station in Narayanganj's Sonargaon upazila. 

However, police said that they have handed him over to Hefajat-e-Islam leaders.

While talking to police, Mamunul has claimed that the woman who was accompanied him is his second wife.

Police arrested Hefajat-e-Islam joint secretary general on Saturday evening and tried to take him to the police station. At that time, Hefajat-e-Islam activists, being informed, rushed to the spot and vandalized the resort. 

Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Atiqul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (land) Golam Mostafa Munna, Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) TM Mosharraf Hossain, Sonargaon Police Station OC (Investigation) Tabidur Rahman and more than 50 journalists were confined inside the resort. 

At one stage, Mamunul Haque was 'snatched' away from the police by the agitated Hifazat activists. Later they brought out procession in the area, protesting the incident.

Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) TM Mosharraf Hossain said Mamunul was handed over to Hefajat-e-Islam leaders at one stage of the incident.

Earlier in the afternoon, Mamunul Haque was confined to the resort by the locals. Upon receiving the news, the local administration, police and journalists went to the spot.

Claiming the woman as his second wife, Maulana Mamunul Haque told Daily Samakal, “I came here (to the resort) to rest after visiting the Sonargaon Museum with my wife. But some angry and unruly people followed me as well as abused me. I will take legal action against them.”
