2 killed, 25 injured in Armanitola building fire

Two people were killed and 25 others sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out at a building in the Armanitola area of Old Dhaka early Friday.

One of the deceased has been identified as Sumaiya Akhter, 22, while the identity of another -- a security guard of the building -- is yet to be established, reports UNB.

Those injured include three fire service officials, who have been admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Rasel Sikdar, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.

The fire started at 3.16 am on the ground floor of the six-storey building, he said, adding that 19 fire tenders were pressed into service soon, he said.

The fire was doused around 6 am after almost three hours of frantic efforts, Rasel said. "A probe has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the fire."
