Kuwait court extends imprisonment of ex-MP Papul to 7 years

A Kuwait court has extended the imprisonment of former Bangladeshi MP Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul to seven years from four years. The court also fined him 20 lakh Kuwaiti dinars.

Kuwait's Appeal Court extended the imprisonment of former Bangladeshi MP Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Papul by three years along with two Kuwaitis.

Sources in the Kuwaiti public prosecutor's office and the country's Arabic daily Al-Qabas reported the news.

The others whose imprisonment were also increased include Kuwait's interior ministry's Assistant Under-Secretary Maj Gen Mazen Al-Jarrah and former MP candidate Salah Khorshid.

Two cases were filed against Papul in Kuwait, one was for human trafficking while the other for bribery. Of the two, he was sentenced to four years in jail for bribery. This time his jail term has been extended by three years to seven years for human trafficking. On the other hand, the money laundering case against him is still pending.

Kazi Shahid Islam Papul was arrested on the night of June 6 last year by Kuwait's Criminal Investigation Department. A Kuwaiti court sentenced him to seven-and-a-half months of detention and three-and-a-half months after the start of the trial.
