EVM voting plan for 4 vacant seats in the parliament

The Election Commission (EC) is planning to conduct Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) voting in all the four vacant seats of the National Assembly - Dhaka-14, Comilla-5, Sylhet-3 and Laxmipur-2.

However, due to the deteriorating situation in Corona, all the elections in the country have been postponed and it has not been decided yet when the by-polls will be held in these constituencies.

The Dhaka-14 seat became vacant with the death of Bangladesh Awami League leader Aslamul Haque MP while the Comilla-5 seat became vacant following the death of Awami League MP Abdul Matin Khasru.

On the other hand, Laxmipur-2 of independent member Mohammad Shahid Islam Papul was declared null and void due to his conviction in a Kuwaiti court. Besides, Sylhet-3 seat became vacant on the death of Awami League leader Mahmud Us Samad.

According to the Election Commission sources, at present the Election Commission has about one lakh and twenty-five thousand EVMs. The commission plans to buy 35,000 EVMs this year to increase the use of EVMs in elections.
