Truck-covered van strikes to continue unless oil prices reduced: Leaders

Leaders of the Truck-Covered Van Owners 'Workers' Association said the strike would be called off if fuel prices fell or fares were adjusted or a logical solution was found.

They told reporters after a meeting with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal in Dhanmondi on Saturday.

Earlier, a 15-member team including Truck-covered Van Owners Workers Association president Mahbul Ahmed and general secretary Talukder Mohammad Monir met him at the home minister's residence in Dhanmondi around 12 noon on Saturday.

The truck-covered van owners' association also demanded the withdrawal of the decision to increase fuel prices.

The other two demands are to stop collecting tolls from freight truck-covered vans and to stop collecting tolls on various bridges.

If the demands are not met, the strike will not be called off, said Abdul Motaleb, Additional Secretary General of the Workers 'and Employers' Federation.

The Home Minister assured that he would discuss their demands with the Prime Minister.

The transport strike has been continuing from Friday in protest of rising fuel prices.

Last Wednesday night, the price of diesel was increased by Tk 15 or 23 percent to Tk 80.

On Thursday morning, the owners 'and workers' union called for a strike, creating immense sufferings to the people.
