13 to die for lynching 6 students in Aminbazar

A Dhaka court has sentenced 13 people to death and 19 to life imprisonment for killing six students suspecting them as robbers at Dhaka's Aminbazar in 2011.

Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court-2 Judge Ismat Jahan pronounced the verdict on Thursday.

The convicts are- Abdul Malek, Sayeed Member, Rashid, Ismail, Limon, Mir Hossain, Mojibur Rahmar alias Barisalla Mojibar, Anwar Hossain, Rajab Ali, Alam, Md Rana, Abdul Hamid and Aslam Mia. Besides, 25 accused were acquitted in the verdict. During the trial, three accused died of natural causes.

On July 18, 2011, the night of Shab-e-Barat, seven students of different Dhaka schools and colleges, visited Aminbazar Bridge area. A mob of villagers put attention on them and suspected them as robbers. They later stormed on them and beat the students to death.

The victims are - Tipu Sultan of Tejgaon College, Towhidur Rahman Palash, Kamruzzaman Kanto and Ibrahim Khalil of Mirpur Bangla College, Shams Rahim Shamam of Maple Leaf International School, and Sitaf Jabi Munif of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology.

Their friend Al Amin, who was also with them, was the lone survivor of the massacre. 

Savar police filed a case accusing at least 500 unidentified villagers over the incident. 

A chargesheet mentioning 60 people in the case was submitted by RAB on January 13, 2013.

On October 30 of the same year, the court framed charges against the accused.
