Hawkers block road in Uttara

The hawkers first gathered at Rabindra Sarani in the capital's Uttara around 10am on Saturday demanding an end to the evictions and permanent rehabilitation and later in the afternoon, they blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

Following the blockade, traffic on both sides of the road is closed.

Hawker leader and joint secretary of Uttara West Thana Krishak League Russell Mandal told the media that hawkers have been evicted in different areas of Uttara for several days now. 

He said that they want permanent rehabilitation of hawkers.

“Hawkers are protesting on both sides of the road. As a result, traffic on both sides of the road is closed. Attempts are being made to normalize the situation by talking to hawkers,” said Traffic Police Inspector (TI) Akhtaruzzaman, also in-charge of Rajlaxmi area of Uttara.
