Livestock Ministry now forms probe body over death of animals in Bangabandhu Safari Park

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has formed a shadow investigation committee to look into the deaths of 13 animals at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur.

Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and head of the inquiry committee, confirmed the information to The Daily Samakal on Thursday.

“Following our request, the shadow investigation committee has been formed by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock,” he said.

Phulbaria Animal Hospital chief Sarwar Alam will lead the team. The other members of the committee are Nazmul Alam and Sukesh Chandra Vaidya, veterinarians of Mirpur National Zoo.

Meanwhile, three more members have been added to the five-member committee formed by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.

The new members of the committee are - Professor of Pathology Faculty of Bangladesh Agricultural University Md Abu Hadi Nur Ali Khan, Central Disease Investigation Laboratory (CDIL) head Golam Azam Chowdhury, and an additional deputy commissioner representing the district administration.

Besides, the previously fixed 10 working days for the probe body expired on Wednesday. Later, the time was extended for another 10 days on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the investigation committee formed by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and members of the board of expert doctors held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to unravel the mystery of the death of 13 animals in the safari park.
