Neighbouring country encourages yaba smugglers: Home Minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that the neighbouring country encourages yaba smugglers to smuggle the drug to the country.

He was speaking at the 27th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Coast Guard on Tuesday morning.

“We are holding talks with the neighbouring countries at the ministerial level, at the BGB-Coastguard level. As well as we are strengthening the bordering areas. We are installing sensors at the borders. The government plans to add more boats to the Coast Guard. We want to control drugs with zero tolerance policy,” said Kamal.

The Home Minister also said, “Bangladesh is not a drug producing country. We are doing our utmost to protect our generation from its terrible clutches. We are in talks with the neighbouring countries who make this drug. We are taking strict measures at the borders. We are strengthening the Coast Guard. Among the many purposes, to control drug is also a big purpose.”

“Our coastline is 47,000 kilometers,” he said, adding that, “Whenever we are strengthening the problematic area, traffickers are trying to infiltrate through other areas. Wherever we block a path, the alternative path is created.”

“We have brought ships from Italy to strengthen the Coast Guard. More ships will be bought. The manpower that is currently available to manage them is not enough. That is why we are amending the law. The Coast Guard will be created as a force in the same way as the BGB has created its own force.”
