The new mayor of New York, meanwhile, vowed a few weeks ago to pave the way for subway trains and to launch a campaign to evict displaced people from the stations. He also announced the recruitment of more police personnel in the subway stations. But since then, crime at subway stations has risen nearly 200 percent.

According to a recent report in the New York Times, the subway train has become a name of terror in New York instead of public transport. Most of the recent violence in the city is taking place at subway stations. There were at least six stabbings on the subway during the weekend in the first week of March.

More notably, members of the Asian community, including Bangladesh and China, were attacked in almost every one of these criminal activities. Incidents such as being pushed from a platform and thrown in front of a moving train, being hit with a hammer, stabbing and punching Asian passengers in the train compartment to knock them unconscious are almost common.

In the seven days from February 21 to February 27, some 55 criminal incidents were reported to the police on the subway, according to New York Police Statistics. The crime rate at subway stations is 205.6 percent higher than the same period in 2021. From February 21 to February 27, 2021, 18 criminal incidents were reported to the New York police on the subway.

The statistics also show that as of February 27 this year, 375 crimes had been reported to the police in 58 days on the New York City subway. During the same period of 2021, some 217 incidents were reported to the police. In addition, New York police believe that many crimes that are not reported to the police are taking place on these subways.

Most of these incidents are reported to the New York Police Department as part of a hate crime because in most cases, the attackers quickly leave the place after the attack. They don't even try to loot anything. Victims allege that in almost every case of assault on them, the attackers used racist language in their dirty language and asked them to leave America. The attackers also threatened to inflict more severe consequences if they did not do so.

Apart from this, crimes like shootings and murders are also happening in the city. However, police believe that the crime rate in the city as a whole has dropped significantly from the previous year.

Joseph Giaclen, a criminologist and part-time professor at John J. College of Criminal Justice, says that when New Yorkers are going to fill up the economic losses because of the horrors of corona, they have to think about the crime that they may be victims of. At the same time, he expressed frustration that the police could not control the subway crime.

He said if the administration wants people to go back to work, then public transport must be made crime-free because the subway is the lifeblood of New York City. If passengers are afraid to use the subway and now the picture of crime on the subway is enough to make them hesitant.

The New York City Police Department, meanwhile, described 10 of New York City's subway stations as "extremely dangerous" for crime and advised passengers to be especially careful.
