Indigenous farmer dies taking poison for not getting water in the farm land

Indigenous (Santal) farmer Abhinath Mardi died of taking poison protesting water crisis in his farm land in Ishwaripur area of Godagari upazila in Rajshahi on Wednesday night.

At the same time, his cousin Ravi Mardi, 32, who was seriously ill due to taking poison for the same reasons, has been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Mardi, 30, is the son of Babu Chand Mardi of Naibaghutu area of Nabaibattala in Deopara union of the upazila.

After the incident, the operator of the deep tube well of Barind Development Authority fled the spot. It is learned that extreme anger is prebailing among the Indigenous (Santal) community in the area.

Godagari Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamrul Islam said police were dispatched after hearing the incident. 

“However, the operator was not found. Legal action will be taken on the matter,” he continued.
