Being unable to bear torture, DU student Elma committed suicide: DB

Elma Chowdhury, a student of Dance Department at Dhaka University (DU), committed suicide after she failed to bear the torture of the family of her father-in-law.

After nearly four months of investigation, the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has reached this conclusion.

Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB's Gulshan division, told the Daily Samakal, "We have confirmed from digital-forensic evidence as well as the interrogation of the accused and other witnesses that Elma has committed suicide." 

He added that her husband Iftekhar Abedin, mother-in-law Shirin Amin and father-in-law Md. Amen persuaded her to commit suicide. 

Later, being unable to bear the torture, Elma committed suicide, Mashiur said.

Elma, 26, died on December 14 of last year, three days after her expatriate husband Iftekhar Abedin, 35, returned home from Canada. There were wound marks on various parts of her body.
