Child dies after speedboat sinks on Sandwip route, many missing

A speedboat with at least 20 passengers on board sank on the Chittagong-Sandwip route at around 9am on Wednesday.

A 10-year-old boy was rescued and taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His identity was not known yet.

Witnesses said some five to six passengers were rescued. 

However, the administration has not yet confirmed the exact number of missing persons.

Sandwip Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Samrat Khisa said, “I am at the river ghat. One child has died. I hear that three children are still missing. Most of the passengers were rescued. However, it will take some more time to find out the actual number of missing persons.”

Incidentally, on April 2, 2017, some 18 people lost their lives when a red boat sank at the same ghat.
