Appellate Division upholds death penalty of two over RU Prof Taher murder

The Appellate Division today affirmed a High Court decision that confirmed two prisoners' death sentences, one of whom was a former professor at Rajshahi University (RU), and sentenced two others to life in prison for the 2006 murder of RU Professor S Taher Ahmed.

On April 21, 2013, the HC upheld the death sentences of Dr Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin, a former RU teacher, and Jahangir Alam, the caretaker at Prof Taher's apartment, for their roles in Prof Taher's horrible murder.

The HC, on the other hand, modified the death sentences of two additional defendants to life in prison. Abdus Salam, Jahangir Alam's brother, and Nazmul, Jahangir Alam's brother-in-law, are the two convicted.

Deceased Prof Taher's family members expressed satisfaction at the apex court verdict. They now want to see the execution of the verdict.
