District Council (amendment) Bill, 2022 passed in parliament

The District Council (Amendment) Bill,2022 was passed today in parliament, abolishing the requirement that all district councils have the same number of members.

Md Tajul Islam, the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, introduced the bill in the House, which was carried overwhelmingly by voice votes with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

The LGRD minister, who is piloting the bill, stated that the government's goal is to improve the law and activate the district council by establishing a link between the various levels of local government.

Protesting the enactment of the law, BNP lawmaker HarunurRashid of Chapainawabganj-3 said the draft of the law is defective.

The existing law says every district must have 15 general members and five seats reserved for women members.
