Cyclone Asani moves northwestwards; heavy rainfall likely in 3 divisions

The severe cyclonic storm 'Asani,' which was over west central Bay and adjoining southeast Bay before it traveled northwestwards, is now over west central Bay and the surrounding area.

According to a Met office advisory, it was centered at 6 a.m. at about 1085 km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 1020 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 1020 km south-southwest of Mongla port, and 995 km south-southwest of Payra port.

It will most likely move northwest, according to the report.

Within 64 km of the severe cyclonic storm center, the maximum sustained wind speed is around 89 kph, with gusts or squalls reaching 117 kph.

Near the severe cyclonic center, the sea will continue high.

Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra maritime ports have been warned to raise the distant warning signal No 2.

Over the North Bay and deep sea, all fishing boats and trawlers have been instructed to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution.

They are also advised not to go deep sea diving.

As severe cyclonic storm 'Asani' proceeded northwestwards over west central Bay and adjoining southeast Bay, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for three divisions today.

"Moderately heavy (23-43mm) to very heavy (88mm or more) rainfall is expected across Khulna, Chattogram, and Barishal divisions over the next 24 hours beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday," according to BMD.
