Eid journey claims 400 lives

According to two platforms advocating for commuter rights, almost 400 individuals died in incidents across the country during the Eid-ul-Fitr travel.

In 14 days (April 25-May 8) during the Eid voyage, at least 376 people were killed and 1,500 injured across 283 incidents in Bangladesh, according to the Road Safety Foundation.

There were 38 women and 51 children among the dead.

According to the foundation, 156 people died in 128 motorbike accidents, accounting for 41.48 percent of all fatalities.

Accidents claimed the lives of 54 people. In addition, 49 vehicle drivers and assistance died in incidents during the Eid travel.

During this time, seven canal accidents claimed the lives of five persons and injured two others.

 In 17 train incidents, 19 people died and three were injured.

The analysis was compiled using information from nine national dailies, seven online news sites, and electronic media.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity reported that during the 15-day Eid voyage, at least 418 people died and 844 were injured in 372 incidents.

According to the group, traffic accidents and deaths are 14.51 percent and 22.35 percent more than they were a year ago.

The information was released today at a news conference held by Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, the organization's secretary general.
