Bangladesh seeks more Swiss investment

Md Shahriar Alam, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, has urged for increased Swiss investment in Bangladesh.

According to a foreign ministry press statement issued on Tuesday, he made this call during a bilateral discussion with Swiss State Secretary Livia Leu on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos on Monday.

During the discussion, Shahriar Alam informed the Swiss state secretary that Bangladesh is one of the simplest countries to invest in.

He also praised Bangladesh's excellent socioeconomic progress under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visionary leadership.

He emphasized Bangladesh's extraordinary performance in pandemic response and recovery by shedding light on the government's several effective efforts to combat the Covid-19 epidemic.

The state minister requested that Switzerland continue to help efforts to find a long-term solution to the Rohingya situation.

He acknowledged the people of Bangladesh's thanks to Switzerland for recognizing his country on March 13, 1972, during the 50th anniversary of their bilateral relationship.

Bangladesh's noteworthy socio-economic development under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was praised by the Swiss state secretary.

She also praised Bangladesh's government and people for sheltering over a million displaced Rohingya people.

In the next years, the Swiss state secretary indicated interest in increasing bilateral ties with Bangladesh, particularly commerce and investment.

She also highlighted Switzerland's readiness to sign the Air Service Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding on Skill and Knowledge Partnership with Bangladesh.

She also expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh government for pledging unwavering support for Switzerland's bid for non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council.

Shahriar Alam is in Switzerland on business, attending the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos.
