Samrat sent to jail after surrendering at Dhaka court

Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat, an expelled Jubo League leader, was sentenced to prison on Tuesday after surrendering to a Dhaka court seeking bail in a corruption case.

Between 2011 and 2018, Samrat was accused of siphoning over Tk 222 crore and channeling it to casinos in Singapore and Malaysia.

His lawyer filed a petition to have him treated properly at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

After Samrat surrendered in accordance with a High Court directive, Judge Al Asad Md Asifuzzaman of Special Judge's Court-6 of Dhaka issued the ruling.

On May 18, the High Court revoked Samrat's bail and ordered him to appear in court before the lower court in the case within seven days.

Samrat appealed the HC ruling to the Supreme Court after it was issued. However, on May 23, the chamber judge refused to stay the HC bail judgment.

The chamber judge, Justice M Enayetur Rahim, sent the case to the full bench for hearing on May 30.

Samrat was released on bail on May 11 after spending over two and a half years in jail in four cases after Judge of Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 granted him bail to Samrat in the corruption case.
